Countering terrorism
The Programme Office provides systematic and tailored capacity-building and technical assistance to relevant government bodies and the civil society sector of Tajikistan in preventing and countering violent extremism and radicalization leading to terrorism (VERLT).. Its cooperation with civil society focuses on strengthening societal resilience in countering VERLT. The Office works with local community members, teachers, youth and women leaders to raise their awareness on VERLT-related factors and sensitize them on early signs of terrorist radicalization and violent extremism.
The Office also co-operates with national authorities including the Prosecutor’s General’s Office and the MIA in its efforts aimed at detecting and interdicting the financing of terrorism, advocating for an effective prevention on the use of the internet for terrorist purposes, and by upholding fundamental freedoms.. In the work of preventing violent extremism, the Office makes use of OSCE and UNESCO manuals, which emphasize the respect for human rights in training and advocacy. The Office also assists the host country with expertise in developing state policies on the subject matter and assists in the implementation of strategic topics, as requested by the host government.
