OSCE Mission to Moldova brings together lawyers working to safeguard the rights of children on both banks of the Dniester/Nistru River
The OSCE Mission to Moldova organized the third Human Rights Club meeting this year for lawyers from both banks of the Dniester/Nistru River. The event, hosted by the Mission on 30 October 2015 in Tiraspol, brought together some 25 lawyers to discuss legal approaches to safeguarding the rights of children living on both banks of the Dniester/Nistru River.
Participants focused on legal issues confronting children from vulnerable families and those housed in children’s homes. It was highlighted that children need proper documentation in order to continue their education and participate in both social and public life.
“Children and young people who have lost their parents often face lengthy procedures to have their identity verified, creating problems well into adulthood,” said Iuliana Abramova, director of the NGO ‘Resonance’ from Bender. “By identifying specific challenges and comparing our approaches to resolving such issues, we have been able to reassess how we handle the documentation problems facing minors.”
The event was held as part of a year-long project that facilitates the exchange of experiences between lawyers from both banks and supports the development of civil society. The final meeting of the Human Rights Club is planned for December 2015 in Chisinau.
