OSCE Office in Yerevan supported workshop for Armenian journalists on reporting about penal system
OSCE Office in Yerevan in co-operation with the non-governmental organization Helsinki Committee of Armenia organized a workshop on principles of reporting about penal system, for journalists from 28 to 29 September 2013 in Tsaghkadzor.
Some 20 journalists and press officers from Armenian Justice Ministry and Penitentiary Department discussed responsible reporting on issues and cases related to persons in detention or imprisonment. The workshop focused on upholding the human rights and fundamental freedoms, as well as basic principles of accurate reporting and journalistic ethics.
Local experts with support of an international expert moderated discussions on ways to report with due consideration of the rights of persons in detention or imprisonment, based on national and international legal frameworks and good practices.
The seminar participants also debated on the role of the media as watchdogs and as a channel between state authorities and society. Practical interactive games and simulation exercises took place to ensure better understanding of the topics.
The event is part of the Office’s larger efforts to promote criminal justice and penitentiary reform through workshops and training.
