OSCE Centre, U.S. Embassy in Tashkent hold workshop on government-civil society co-operation in preventing human trafficking

TASHKENT, 8 November 2004 - Learning from international and local best practices of government-civil society co-operation in preventing human trafficking was the focus of a work-shop, organized jointly by the OSCE Centre in Tashkent and the U.S. Embassy in Uzbekistan.
The one-and-a-half-day event, that ends today, brought together 70 participants from government, civil society and the media from all regions of the country.
The workshop was opened by the U.S. Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Jon R. Purnell, who underscored the importance of prevention in combating the threat of human trafficking.
The second of its kind, the workshop on "Joint efforts to combat trafficking in human beings", is part of a series of training courses for officials, journalists and NGOs conducted by the Centre in 2003 and 2004.
Topics discussed during the workshop included: international and local best practices, better co-operation between the media, official structures and public organizations, developing joint strategies for combating trafficking and specific case studies.
