OSCE Office assists in training of Uzbek customs officers
TASHKENT 21 May 2004
TASHKENT, 21 May 2004 - A ten-day training course for a group of Uzbek customs officers with Austrian Customs Officials concluded today. It was conducted at several border crossing-points with Slovenia and Italy and at a border-crossing point between Croatia and Slovenia.
Organized by the OSCE Centre in Tashkent and financed by the German Foreign Ministry, it helped ten Uzbek officers acquire skills to better combat trafficking of small arms and light weapons in their country.
Participants had the opportunity to become familiar with the experience of their Austrian counterparts in this field and to observe internationally accepted rules, regulations and ethics in border management.
Such courses are intended to enhance the capacities of Uzbek customs authorities and stimulate their efforts in reducing the threat imposed by the accumulation and uncontrolled spread of illicit weapons in the Central Asian region.
Since 2002, the OSCE Centre in Tashkent has been providing theoretical and practical training, English language classes and technical assistance to Uzbek custom officials and border guards.
