World Press Freedom Day will be observed in Uzbekistan
TASHKENT 30 April 2004
TASHKENT, 30 April 2004 - World Press Freedom Day will be marked in Tashkent on 3 May by a national media conference which will discuss the situation of the media in Uzbekistan.
Organized by the OSCE Centre in Tashkent, the UN Office, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and Friedrich Ebert Foundation Offices, and the International Centre for In-Service Training of Journalists, it will bring together local journalists and editors, as well as representatives of state ministries, international organizations, civil society, and the diplomatic corps.
The conference will be followed by an awards ceremony for winners of two contests organized for journalists by the OSCE Centre in Tashkent and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation earlier this year.
World Press Freedom Day serves as a reminder of the need to respect press freedom and as a day of remembrance for journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.
Issues related to the freedom of the media are among priority issues in the activities of the OSCE Centre in Tashkent.
