Witness and victim protection working group established in Ukraine
KYIV 22 October 2001
KYIV, 22 October 2001 (OSCE) - The OSCE Project Co-ordinator, in co-operation with ODIHR, has launched a project aimed at protecting witnesses and victims of human trafficking and organized crime in Ukraine.
A working group was established to elaborate recommendations for a witness and victim protection programme. Participants, coming from the General Prosecutors' Office, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the State Security Service and NGOs, were chosen on the basis of their prior experience in trafficking cases, and their ability to influence future policy-making on trafficking and witness protection issues.
The working group will leave on 28 October for Lithuania in order to study Lithuanian efforts in the field of witness and victim protection. On 26 and 27 November, members of the working group will participate to a workshop in Kiev. The aim of the workshop is to develop a co-ordinated plan between law enforcement and NGOs to improve witness and victim protection in trafficking cases in Ukraine.
