DUSHANBE, 7 October 2004 - A Media Resource Centre which will give Tajik journalists access to the internet, satellite television and various publications opened on Wednesday in Dushanbe.
Supported by the OSCE Centre in Dushanbe, it will also offer training in TV, radio, photojournalism and investigative reporting, as well as English language and computer courses. Free legal consultation on media legislation and on the legal rights will be available to journalists.
"Support to the media is one of the priority areas of the OSCE Centre in Dushanbe," said Ambassador Yves Bargain, its Head. "More than 40,000 euros have been allocated for the Media Resource Centre, which makes it one of our major projects in 2004".
On the occasion of its opening today, the Resource Centre published the first issue of a weekly electronic newsletter, Praktika, which will be distributed to Tajik and other Central Asian journalists, universities, libraries, specialised institutions and professionals. Praktika will provide background information on the media situation in Tajikistan and investigative reports on domestic and foreign political, social, cultural and economic issues. The Media Resource Centre will also issue an analytical quarterly bulletin providing news and in-depth research on developments in the Tajik media.
"The OSCE Centre continues to be very concerned about the situation surrounding the closure of the independent publishing house Jionhon and the fact that a number of independent newspapers cannot find a publisher. According to another report, one independent newspaper has no other option but to seek a publisher abroad," added Ambassador Bargain.
"The Government of Tajikistan is very grateful to the OSCE for opening a Media Resource Centre, and will try to find a solution to the present irregularities in the media situation in the country," said Karomatullo Olimov, Presidential Advisor on Social Development and Relations with the Public.
Media Development is one of the priority areas of the OSCE Centre in Dushanbe, which has allocated nearly 300,000 euro on media-related projects in Tajikistan this year.
