DUSHANBE, 1 June 2004 - The impact of education on security, stability and reducing poverty was the focus of a roundtable held yesterday in the Tajik capital.
More than 70 representatives of political parties, NGOs, national minorities, teachers, international organizations and government officials took part in the event, which was organized by the OSCE Centre in Dushanbe and the Social Partnership Club, a forum for civil society.
Speaking of the main problems faced by schools and universities in Tajikistan, Karumatullo Olimov, State Adviser to President Emomali Rakhmonov, said that the increasing number of students, the lack of textbooks, and low salaries of teachers were the main factors that have a negative impact on the quality of education.
Ambassador Yves Bargain, Head of the OSCE Centre in Dushanbe, recalled the conclusions of a high-level OSCE conference on education held recently in Tashkent and stressed the key role of education in building security, ensuring political stability and reducing poverty.
"Education can have significant effects on the ability of communities to live together in peace," he said.
He also explained the activities of the OSCE civic education programme for young people in Tajikistan.
The debates focused on the mechanisms that might be used to improve the difficult situation in the education system, and concluded on the need to mobilize all stakeholders, state institutions, teachers and communities to participate in the education reform process for the benefit of future generations.
