GARM, 6 February 2004 - The OSCE Centre in Dushanbe's Garm Field Office opened an Information Centre for the youth of the Rasht Valley on Thursday, a first of its kind in this remote and mountainous region of Tajikistan.
It is equipped with computers, information CDs, and will provide visitors with the main Tajik newspapers and magazines. A small library will offer books to young readers.
"The OSCE Centre in Dushanbe and its Garm Field Office organized several summer camps for young people who live in the Rasht Valley," said Alexandru Codreanu, Deputy Head of the Centre. "The camps helped to initiate a fruitful dialogue on ways to foster a more active role for young people in civil society, spark their interest and encourage their participation in the public debate on key social, democratic and environmental issues."
Mullojon Ahmadov, Deputy Head of Rasht District, added that Rasht Valley was one of the regions which suffered the most from the civil war. "Young people are still facing the aftermath. In view of this access to information and better education opportunities are crucial for building a future for the youth in the valley."
Aleksandr Kuzmin, Head of OSCE Garm Field Office pointed out that, given the power shortages, it was decided to open the Centre in the OSCE Field Office premises, where electricity is constantly available during daytime. "The Centre will give the young people of the Rasht district a chance to improve their knowledge of high technologies and to use computers. Our next goal is to offer them access to the Internet."
