Draft Tajik advertising law discussed at OSCE roundtable
DUSHANBE 23 April 2003
DUSHANBE, 23 April 2003 - Provisions of a draft Tajik law on advertising have been reviewed in an OSCE roundtable in the country's capital, Dushanbe.
Hosted by the OSCE Centre in Dushanbe, the meeting discussed the draft law from the point of interest of media members, as advertising is one of the main sources of funding for the media and hence plays an important role in their independence.
About 35 representatives of the legislative and execute bodies, as well as media representatives from newspapers, radio, television and information agencies from Dushanbe and Khujand participated in the event.
The event was organized at the initiative of the Parliamentary Committee on International Affairs, Public Associations and Information, as well as several local media organizations, and was supported by the OSCE Centre in Dushanbe.
The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee, Assomuddin Saidov, said the roundtable was the last step in the process of soliciting public opinion of the draft law before resubmitting it to the Parliament. He noted that in the course of public discussion almost 80 per cent of the draft law has been amended since the first hearing in the Parliament.
Sergei Vlasenko, lawyer for the Internews Network, Kazakhstan, also presented his legal expertise on the draft law's conformity with international standards. He was commissioned to write the report by the OSCE Centre.
Several suggestions for improving the draft law were discussed during the roundtable. The meeting resulted in proposals to be submitted to the parliamentary working group for consideration.
