DUSHANBE 20 September 2002
DUSHANBE, 20 September 2002 - Ambassador Gilbert, Head of the OSCE Mission to Tajikistan, paid a visit to the Kolkhozabad and Kumsandgir districts in Southern Tajikistan.
During his meeting with local government representatives, Ambassador Gilbert agreed that the political and social situation in the region had stabilized, but emphasized that more attention should be paid to the problems of national minorities, freedom of religion, and the strengthening of a multiparty system.
The Head of Mission also expressed his concern with the level and quality of education in primary and secondary schools. He noted that the collapse of the Soviet system and civil war in Tajikistan had led to many qualified teachers leaving the country.
During a visit to a Russian-Uzbek language school in Kolkhozabad district, Ambassdor Gilbert announced that the Mission had subscribed the school along with another 115 schools of the region to a prominent local newspaper. The OSCE Mission will also provide assistance to the schools willing to organize their own newspaper.
On the same day, the Head of the Mission participated in the opening ceremony for a public information board in Kolkhozabad. In co-operation with local authorities, similar information boards were installed in the Kumsangir and Panj districts and aim at facilitating the residents'access to information. More than 250,000 inhabitants of the region now have access to the latest newspapers delivered on a regular basis by the Mission.
