DUSHANBE 18 June 2002
DUSHANBE, 18 June 2002 - Speaking on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the signing of the peace accords in Tajikistan, the OSCE Secretary General, Jan Kubis, today urged the Tajik authorities "to continue with determination the reform process".
"It is vital to carry on with the democratization process and the transition to a functioning market economy in accordance with good governance principles", he said at an international conference organized by the United Nations University for Peace in the Tajik capital, Dushanbe.
"For the OSCE, which was one of the guarantors of the Peace Agreement of June 1997, Tajikistan and the entire Central Asian region have always been of particular importance", Ambassador Kubis said. "When President Emomali Rakhmonov and Said Abdullo Nuri [the head of the Islamic Renaissance Party] signed the Peace Agreement, they made a historic step of the highest political courage".
During his two-day visit to Tajikistan, which ends today, Secretary General Kubis met Tajikistan's President, Emomali Rakhmonov, the country's Foreign Minister, Talbak Nazarov, as well as the leaders of the Islamic Revival and Democratic Party.
