OSCE starts civic education programme in Tajikistan
DUSHANBE 3 October 2001
DUSHANBE, 3 October 2001 (OSCE) - The OSCE Mission to Tajikistan has begun the implementation of a six-month civic education programme in the country. The programme started with a seminar entitled "Journalism for Youth", which was held by the Mission's Field Office in Dusti.
The event was attended by 20 pupils that had been competitively selected from Qumsangir, Kolkhozobod and Panj districts of the Khatlon Province in southern Tajikistan. It was aimed at teaching pupils on issues related to the place and role of journalism in the democratic society: the mass media, its task and duties; importance of the information in the democratic society; the independent mass media; the legislation on the mass media. The seminar finished by preparating of a "Wall Newspaper".
Within the civic education programme, the Mission plans to hold a series of seminars in the areas of operation of all OSCE Field Offices in Tajikistan, and to cover wide circles of the Tajik society, including the local authorities, political parties, law enforcement agencies, women and youth.
The main goal of the programme is to increase the awareness of the Tajik people regarding human rights and freedoms, democratic norms and standards, as well as principles underlying the building and functioning of a civil society. In this context, the civic education programme will focus on issues such as multi-party systems, human rights, prevention of torture, local governance, women rights, and freedom of the media.
