Meeting on trafficking in human beings held in Tajikistan
DUSHANBE 26 June 2001
DUSHANBE, 26 June 2001 (OSCE) - The OSCE Mission to Tajikistan co-organized on 21 June a working round table meeting on the combating of trafficking in human beings, which was attended by representatives of the Tajik authorities, the judiciary, as well as non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the media. The main topic of discussion was a recently finalized report on trafficking in women and children, which was the result of a pilot research project partly financed by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR). The report has been submitted to the Tajik government for comments and suggestions before it will be presented to the public.
Participants at the round table meeting included deputies from the lower and upper chambers of Parliament, members of the General Prosecutors Office and the Tajik ministries, as well as representatives of the country's Supreme Court. The atmosphere of the round table was very cooperative, all parties involved acknowledged the problem of trafficking in human beings and the need to take action against it.
The meeting was jointly organized by the OSCE, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Development Fund for Women. The project report was compiled under the overall guidance of the IOM, and was accomplished in collaboration with the local NGO 'Modar'.
Several weeks prior to the event a working group, including experts on the criminal code as well as parliamentarians, has been established with the task to review the criminal code of the Republic of Tajikistan in view of future amendments related to combating trafficking in human beings. The round table ended with the working group's recommendation of raising awareness within Tajikistan and of amending the criminal code in order to better protect the victims of trafficking.
