OSCE Skopje mission supports Model UN event to help bridge ethnic divisions
SKOPJE 21 June 2004
SKOPJE, 21 June 2004 - An ethnically mixed group of 80 students are participating in a Model UN VIP Conference beginning today at Ohrid.
Working to improve inter-ethnic relations and build confidence, the OSCE Spillover Monitor Mission to Skopje provided organizational and financial support for the Model UN activities focusing on conflict prevention and resolution.
During the conference, the group of 80, selected from among 400 Model UN participants countrywide, will work in a mock UN Disarmament and International Security Building Committee, Humanitarian Social and Cultural Committee, and a mock UN Security Council.
"By joining the in-country Model UN Programme, young people become part of a 200,000-strong family spread over 35 different countries," said Yves Chamorel, Head of the OSCE Mission's Confidence Building Unit.
"Integration is built on mutual respect, equality and understanding of common goals. It is important such a spirit lives on in future generations."
Participants in the event will be trained on UN mechanisms and on organizing conferences, both skills they need to expand Model Un programmes in the country.
"Following the conference, participants will engage in a 'new members' campaign and preparation of a quarterly newsletter," said Arjan Dalipi, Model UN Co-ordinator in Kumanovo.
