OSCE Skopje Mission and Interior Ministry conduct police training on ethics
SKOPJE 17 May 2004
SKOPJE, 17 May 2004 - The OSCE Mission to Skopje and the Ministry of Interior have launched today the first training course for police officers on the Code of Police Ethics. The programme will be attended by more than 30 officers who will then in turn train the rest of the police force.
Developed by the Council of Europe, the OSCE and the Ministry of Interior, the Code of Police Ethics sets the norms for appropriate attitudes and behaviour for Police Officers towards the citizens and each other.
"Both the police force and citizens will benefit from the new Code. It will raise public confidence in the police and will ensure protection of fundamental individual rights and freedoms," said David Tingle, Head of the OSCE Police Development Unit.
The Ministry of Interior considers the application of the new Code of Police Ethics a priority, and will provide training to all its force.
"The Ministry of Interior stands committed to serving all the citizens. The Ministry's Professional Standards Unit will investigate allegations of police misconduct and take appropriate measures as required," said General Borko Markovski, Head of Uniform Police.
Experts from the OSCE and the Ministry of Interior will deliver two five-day "Train the Trainer" programmes, beginning on 17 May and 24 May.
