OSCE Skopje Mission saddened by sudden death of President Trajkovski
SKOPJE 26 February 2004
SKOPJE, 26 February 2004 - The OSCE's Skopje Mission is deeply saddened by the tragic death of President Boris Trajkovski and his entourage today in Bosnia and Herzegovina. President Trajkovski's progressive approach helped ensure his country's place as a young democracy in the concert of nations.
"President Trajkovski was a courageous man whose commitment to reform was instrumental in bringing the country closer to Europe," said Carlos Pais, the Head of the OSCE Spillover Monitoring Mission to Skopje.
"His inclusive approach to politics was important in the signing of the Ohrid Framework Agreement and much of the success in its implementation was due to his continuing interest and support," he added. "His loss is a national tragedy."
The OSCE Mission had particularly close contacts with the President throughout the crisis in 2001. Those close contacts continued up through the present. His political and personal support was crucial to the Mission's efforts - especially in assisting the redeployment of police throughout the former crisis regions.
His legacy of reconciliation and unification will live on through this country's continued successes. The full implementation of the Framework Agreement and steps towards Euro-Atlantic integration will be a tribute to all the values President Trajkovski stood for.
The Mission sends its deepest condolences to the citizens of the country, especially to the families of the deceased, including President Trajkovski's wife and children, at this time of their great loss.
