International community welcomes census results in Skopje as fair and accurate
SKOPJE 1 December 2003
SKOPJE, 1 December 2003 - The Skopje-based representatives of the OSCE, the EU, NATO and the U.S. welcomed the publication of the 2002 Census results published today.
A joint statement by the EU Special Representative Alexis Brouhns, the Head of the Delegation of the European Commission, Ambassador Donato Chiarini, the U.S. Ambassador Lawrence Butler, the Head of the OSCE Spillover Monitor Mission to Skopje, Ambassador Carlos Manuel Durrant Pais, and NATO Ambassador Nicolaas Biegman, reads as follows:
"The International Community welcomes the publication of the Census 2002 results published today by the State Statistical Office. As a vitally important element of the Framework Agreement, the international community has closely monitored the entire census operation.
The results present a fair and accurate statistical analysis and represent a correct statistical image of Macedonia. The final results have been endorsed by the International Census Observer Mission, which has closely monitored the entire census process. The census is based on well established international and European standards.
Given this assessment of the results by the team of international experts from a number of European countries, the international community stands fully behind the results published today by the State Statistical Office.
The analysis of the census data is a lengthy and detailed process. This work continues and will provide the government with data that will help evaluate and plan for future needs. The results of the census will help national and local authorities plan for the future, such as where to build schools and hospitals and where to develop public services and infrastructure. The application of data is far reaching and will help the country grow and prosper.
The international community will remain closely involved in the further processing of the census data. The census is an important part of the implementation of the Framework Agreement, will contribute to development and help bring the country closer to the European Union."
