SKOPJE 10 November 2003
SKOPJE, 10 November 2003 - Thirty-two police officers of mixed ethnicity and gender are attending their first day of OSCE training on community policing today in the Hotel Bistra in Mavrovo.
The OSCE Spillover Monitor Mission to Skopje has developed a specific curriculum for this course. It will provide essential training and skill development in the role and responsibilities of the Community Relations Co-ordinator; assessment and goal development; communications and confidence building; conflict resolution and mediation skills; partnership and meeting facilitation skills and developing multi-media skills.
"The OSCE Spillover Monitor Mission to Skopje in co-operation with the Ministry of Interior is introducing the principles of Community Based Policing through, among other initiatives, the establishment of Citizen Advisory Groups (CAGs)," said Harry Broer, the acting Head of the Mission's Police Development Unit.
"So far the local police officers participated in CAG meetings in addition to their everyday activities. By creating an office of Community Relations Co-ordinators the Ministry of Interior is making further steps in implementing Community Based Policing."
The training will last two weeks. Two additional sessions of theoretical training are planned for 26 November - 6 December 2003 and 12-18 January 2004.
Branko Bojcevski, the Director of the Public Security Bureau of the Ministry of Interior, said "The Ministry believes this training provided by the OSCE Mission will be very important in furthering community policing in the country."
