OSCE Spillover Monitor Mission to Skopje supports anti-trafficking workshop for legal experts
SKOPJE 9 May 2003
SKOPJE, 9 May 2003 - About 70 prosecutors and investigative judges will participate in a two-day workshop financially supported by the OSCE Spillover Monitor Mission to Skopje in Struga on 9 and 10 May.
The focus of the event will be on strengthening prosecutions and fair trials in cases of human trafficking. Judges, prosecutors, lawyers, and representatives of the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Justice will review legal and procedural aspects of trafficking cases, and discuss practical issues related to crime detection, evidence gathering, witness protection and proper conduct at trial.
"The fight against human trafficking is a priority of the OSCE", said Ambassador Craig Jenness, Head of the OSCE Mission. "Condemning the crime of trafficking is the easy part. The difficult task is to prosecute the crime and punish those responsible - and to do it with a solid legal basis, a fair trial, and a just verdict. It's precisely for this reason that we support this initiative."
The workshop, which is organized by the Centre for Continuous Education of the Association of Judges, will be opened by Ambassador Jenness, Agim Miftari, President of the Association of Judges, and Radivoje Jovanovski, State Secretary and President of the National Commission for Counter-trafficking. A follow-up workshop is planned for June.
