OSCE Mission to Skopje supports local media associations
SKOPJE 25 March 2003
SKOPJE, 25 March 2003 - A training programme designed to help the development of media associations in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia was launched yesterday by the OSCE Spillover Monitor Mission to Skopje.
An international expert will spend the next three weeks in the country's capital, Skopje, where he will assist five local media associations with the development of business plans, long term strategies and the improvement of their structures. The objective of this initiative is to enable the associations to strengthen their professionalism and to become financially viable in the future.
Professional media associations play a very important role in representing the interests of the media in the country. Dynamic and professional associations do much to create a healthy media environment, which is a critical element of a democratic society.
The expert, Tim Kenny from the United States, has wide-ranging experience in designing plans for the self-sustainability of similar organizations in other south-east European countries. Until recently he headed the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX) office in Pristina, Kosovo.
The five associations receiving support are: the Association of Printed Media and News Agencies of Macedonia (APMNAM), the Association of Journalists of Macedonia (AJM), the Association of Private Electronic Media of Macedonia (APEMM), the Macedonian Institute for Media (MIM), and the Media Development Centre (MDC).
