OSCE Mission condemns killing of Macedonian policeman
SKOPJE 12 September 2002
SKOPJE, 12 September 2002 - The OSCE Spillover Monitor Mission to Skopje strongly condemned the killing of a police officer in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia this morning.
"We deeply regret this vicious act and express our sincere condolences to the family of Fadil Elmazi, who was killed while performing his duty", said Ambassador Craig Jenness, the Head of the OSCE Mission.
"The perpetrators of this heinous crime, like the killing of two of Mr. Elmazi's colleagues in Gostivar on 26 August, are enemies of all citizens of this country. Their despicable and cowardly act affects all decent persons who want their communities and streets to be safe. We hope the perpetrators will be swiftly brought to justice, and we urge all citizens to co-operate closely with police in the investigation of this case."
The OSCE Mission called upon all political leaders, regardless of ethnicity, to condemn this killing, and to show due respect for the loss of the police officer by fully supporting the police investigation and by avoiding to politicize the unfortunate incident.
"We hope that the authorities, political leaders, local communities and citizens will manifest wisdom and restraint and will act in such a way that the situation remains calm, and the electoral campaign continues peacefully", Ambassador Jenness said.
