International community welcomes peaceful end to Macedonian kidnapping
SKOPJE 2 September 2002
SKOPJE, 31 August 2002 - The following is a Joint Statement by the European Union Special Representative Alain Le Roy, Ambassador Ioannis Economou representing the EU Presidency, the United States Ambassador Lawrence Butler, Ambassador to the OSCE Mission to Skopje Craig Jenness and NATO Ambassador Nicolaas Biegman.
We are pleased that the recent events in Gorna Lesnica ended peacefully with no injuries to local citizens, the security forces or the five persons restrained against their will. All persons abducted were released unharmed.
The government and all parties involved acted with restraint. We appreciate their efforts, and the efforts of the local Albanian leaders and population who worked diligently in helping to resolve the issue.
The security situation in the area is stable and returning to normal.
We call on all parties involved to refrain from any act or provocation which could increase tension or bring violence. We look forward to a peaceful campaign ahead of elections on September 15.
