Maurice Canavan appointed Deputy Head of the OSCE Mission to Skopje

SKOPJE, 30 July 2002 - The Head of the OSCE Spillover Monitor Mission to Skopje, Ambassador Craig Jenness, is pleased to announce the appointment of Maurice Canavan as Deputy Head of the Mission.
Mr. Canavan has extensive experience with international organizations and with peacekeeping operations. Colonel in the Irish Army, he was seconded by the Government of Ireland as Military Adviser of the Permanent Mission of Ireland to the United Nations from 1996 to 1998. From 1965 to 1994, he served in a number of UN peacekeeping missions in Cyprus, the Middle East and Central America.
Prior to his appointment as Deputy Head of Mission, Mr. Canavan held the position of Head of Operations of the OSCE Mission to Skopje, where he arrived in August 2001. He was particularly associated with the recently completed President's Plan for the Return of the Security Forces to the Former Crisis Area where he represented the international community at the daily crisis management committee meetings. Mr. Canavan will continue his interest in all Mission matters, but in his new capacity he will be responsible for the implementation and management of the new Mission structures and the personnel and budgetary implications involved in Mission changes.
Mr. Canavan is married and has three sons and one daughter.
