OSCE monitors police redeployment in former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia
SKOPJE 22 October 2001
SKOPJE, 22 October 2001 (OSCE) - The redeployment of Macedonian police into areas affected by this year's crisis saw a successful start today. Ethnically mixed police patrols, accompanied by OSCE police advisors entered the five 'pilot' villages of Opaje, Lopate, Grusino, Tearce and Lesok this morning. OSCE and European Union monitors, as well as a large number of journalists observed the process.
No incidents were registered, the atmosphere was calm, and the patrols were conducted in a very orderly manner. Today's events reflect the OSCE view that a co-ordinated, well-planned action between the Government, the OSCE, the European Union and NATO can be a success.
Vice-Prime Minister Ilija Filipovski and OSCE Head of Mission Craig Jenness visited the village of Tearce and met with local authorities and the inhabitants of the village.
"The OSCE is very pleased with the development of today's events", Ambassador Jenness said, adding that "we expect the positive signal coming out of today's start of the police redeployment in the pilot villages to be reflected in the Parliament's work. We look forward to a timely conclusion of the current phase of the implementation of the Framework Agreement".
According to an agenda agreed upon last week, the Assembly is to consider amendments to the constitution in the coming days.
