OSCE strongly condemns recent violent acts in former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia
SKOPJE 8 August 2001
SKOPJE, 8 August 2001 (OSCE) - The OSCE strongly condemns the attack by ethnic Albanian armed groups on the convoy of Macedonian security forces on the road Skopje-Tetovo of this morning, which led to several casualties. At the same time the OSCE expresses its sincerest condolences to the families of the victims, who were guilty of nothing but doing their duty.
Yesterday's incident, in which in a random act of violence directed against civilians five construction workers have been detained and mistreated by ethnic Albanian armed groups cannot but be strongly condemned as well.
The use of force for any political reason is and cannot be acceptable. The OSCE remains hopeful that these cruel acts of violent irresponsibility aimed at undermining the political agreement about to be reached in Ohrid will not achieve its aim and that a political settlement of the current conflict can be reached.
