OSCE Mission to Skopje encourages passage of anti-discrimination legislation
SKOPJE 19 December 2006
SKOPJE, 19 December 2006 - The need to enact anti-discrimination legislation was discussed at an OSCE-supported meeting in Skopje today.
Participants at the event, organized by the local non-governmental organization Polio Plus - Movement Against Disability, and supported by the OSCE Mission to Skopje, also encouraged the inclusion of representatives from vulnerable groups in the law drafting process.
"We are pleased that government and civil society representatives are ready to join efforts to develop an anti-discrimination legal framework. The country's vulnerable and marginalized groups would benefit tremendously from the enhanced protection envisioned in the law," said Victor Ullom, Head of OSCE Mission's Rule of Law Department.
Zvonko Shavreski, Polio Plus President, added: "We are glad that the discussion was productive and hope that in 2007, the European Year of Equal Opportunities for all, our country will move a step forward in promoting and protecting the rights of vulnerable groups."
Participants also reviewed the handbook "Developing Anti-discrimination Law in Europe, 25 EU Member States Compared", a useful tool for experts developing anti-discrimination legislation.
