OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier spoke about OSCE-EU co-operation during an address to the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs in Strasbourg on 14 November 2011, ahead of the upcoming OSCE Ministerial Council in Vilnius on 6 and 7 December.
Recalling the European Parliament resolution on strengthening the OSCE in the run-up to last year’s OSCE Astana Summit, Zannier emphasized the need for continued EU support as one of the driving forces behind the OSCE. He highlighted areas of ongoing co-operation between the EU and the OSCE and emphasized the added value that the OSCE can bring to common areas of interest.
Zannier briefed the Committee on the OSCE’s work in Kosovo, protracted conflicts, Belarus, Central Asia, Ukraine and Afghanistan as well as the OSCE’s potential role in supporting the democratic transition in the Southern Mediterranean region.
