OSCE Mission gives additional support to the Office of the Serbian Special Prosecutor on Organized Crime
BELGRADE 9 February 2005
BELGRADE, 9 February 2005 - Ambassador Maurizio Massari, the Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia and Montenegro, today met Serbia's Special Prosecutor on Organized Crime to discuss further co-operation on fighting organized crime.
One major initiative discussed was the growing relationship between the Serbian law enforcement agencies and the Italian Anti-Mafia Directorate.
Following the signing last year of a memorandum of understanding between Pierre Luigi Vigna, the Head of the Anti-Mafia Directorate, and the Serbian Special Prosecutor, six prosecutors from Serbia were sent to Rome and Bari for an intensive one-week study visit to exchange experiences and receive insight into the co-operation within the different institutions of Italy's criminal justice system.
Two senior members of the Italian Anti-Mafia Directorate will come to Belgrade in May to provide further specialist training to prosecutors on issues such as asset seizure. The development of more efficient asset seizure legislation will be an important part of the OSCE Mission's legal assistance programme, which aims at strengthening the legal instruments available to the Serbian judiciary to fight organized crime. Under the programme, the Mission also provided legal expertise on the draft law on witness protection and calls for its rapid adoption and implementation.
