OSCE Mission helps Serbian Parliament open up to the public
BELGRADE 21 April 2004
BELGRADE, 21 April 2004 - The Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia and Montenegro, Ambassador Maurizio Massari, has today met the Speaker of the Serbian Parliament, Predrag Markovic, to give the OSCE support to the outreach activities of the Parliament.
Through the OSCE Mission's Parliamentary Support Programme and a generous financial contribution by the Dutch Government, the Parliament will be able to open up to the public, in particular to high school and university students.
In addition, the parliamentary committees will be able to extend their activities in the various parts of the country. By holding public hearings and roundtable discussions, the committees will be able to hear citizens' concerns and oversee the implementation of the legislation.
The OSCE Mission to Serbia and Montenegro has been supporting the training of the staff of the parliament and providing technical assistance.
"Institutions matter and the Parliament is a central institution for the proper functioning of a European democracy," Ambassador Massari said.
"It is important to make Serbian citizens, civil society and youth more aware and familiar with the Parliament, its role and procedures."
