BELGRADE, 27 February 2004 - Women parliamentarians, gender equality actors and representatives of civil society in Serbia will gather in Belgrade tomorrow at a meeting on Gender Strategy and Activity within the Serbian Parliament.
Organized by the OSCE Mission to Serbia and Montenegro and the Stability Pact Gender Task Force, the meeting will enable the participants to develop their new gender equality strategic plan.
It is also aimed at providing analysis and discussion on the current situation of women's participation in political decision-making bodies, achievements, legacy and lessons learned.
Furthermore, the gathering is expected to provide enough elements to create an action programme for gender equality and establish a Women's Caucus consisting of women MPs within the Serbian Parliament.
The OSCE Mission acknowledges that the equality of men and women and the protection and promotion of women's rights are essential to achieve sustainable democracy, economic prosperity, as well as security and stability in the region.
Thus, in accordance with its mandate, the Mission assists the authorities of Serbia and Montenegro in meeting their international obligations through official introduction of gender equality mechanisms.
Media representatives are invited to attend the opening session of the meeting on Saturday, 28 February, from 9:00 to 9:30 in Belgrade, Hotel Intercontinental.
