OSCE Mission pledges support to Serbian Refugees Commissariat
BELGRADE 22 October 2003
BELGRADE, 22 October 2003 - The OSCE Mission to Serbia and Montenegro has signed an agreement to support the Serbian Commissariat for Refugees. Under the agreement, the OSCE Mission will fund two special adviser positions within the Commissariat, namely for financial and for local settlement issues.
Yesterday's agreement, which comes into immediate effect, builds upon existing co-operation between the OSCE Mission and the Commissariat and aims to build up its human capacity.
"We are very happy to support the work of the Commissariart, as support for refugees is an important part of the Mission's mandate," said Ambassador Maurizio Massari, the Head of the OSCE Mission.
"Given the regional nature of the refugee question, I am happy to see that the Commissariat is developing good co-operation with its partners in both Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia."
Directly following the signing of the agreement by Ambassador Massari and the Commissioner for Refugees, Ozren Tosic, the OSCE Mission facilitated a co-ordination meeting between the Commissariat and the international donor community.
"The Commissariat has an important job to do in order to ensure that refugees have proper housing, social care, employment opportunities and most importantly the possibility to return to their original homes," said Mr. Tosic.
"However, in order to carry out this work effectively, we need the support of international donors."
