OSCE Head of Mission meets head of the Serbian Orthodox Church
BELGRADE 8 July 2003
BELGRADE, 8 July 2003 - The Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia and Montenegro Ambassador Maurizio Massari today met the Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church Pavle to discuss issues relating to human rights, regional co-operation and peaceful co-existence.
Ambassador Massari presented the activities of the OSCE Mission and stressed that the OSCE puts great emphasis upon respect for human rights, human dignity and support for fully democratic institutions. "The church has an important role to play in this regard," said Ambassador Massari. "The church especially has a role to play in promoting harmony and co-existence, irrespective of different religious confessions or ethnicity."
"Rather than looking into the past we should look towards a future where human values and integrity will be fully respected. This country carries a special responsibility to promote human values not only towards its people, but towards the region as well," he added.
Ambassador Massari also said that he looks forward to meeting church representatives throughout Serbia and Montenegro as part of the OSCE Mission's ongoing outreach campaign.
