BELGRADE, 15 April 2003 - Human rights experts from the OSCE and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR) have visited detainees in Belgrade who have been held since the assassination of Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic on 12 March.
The two-day monitoring exercise, which finished today, followed an invitation from the Serbian government to the international community to monitor the situation in Serbian prisons under the state of emergency.
The delegation included representatives of the OSCE Mission to Serbia and Montenegro, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and the UNHCHR.
Over the two days the delegation visited Belgrade's Central Police Station, Central Prison and the Prison Hospital, meeting the heads and senior staff of these institutions. The delegation was granted full and unrestricted access to detainees, fulfilling the conditions requested by the OSCE Mission and UNHCHR. Access to the register books and medical records was also granted.
The OSCE Mission to Serbia and Montenegro, the ODIHR and the UNHCHR will jointly submit a report to the Government and the Ministries of Justice and Interior on its findings.
