OSCE calls Serbian electorate to vote on 8 December
BELGRADE 22 November 2002
BELGRADE, 22 November 2002 - On the occasion of his first visit to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Appointed Head of the OSCE Mission to the FRY Ambassador Maurizio Massari announced that the Mission will launch a campaign to urge all the citizens of Serbia to vote in the 8 December Serbian presidential elections.
Ambassador Massari underscored the need for strong democratic institutions in Serbia so that Serbia's reforms can accelerate. He stated that these elections provide the opportunity to further implement the democratic process in Serbia, which began after the democratic changes in October 2000.
"To vote is to raise one's voice in the forum of democracy," said Ambassador Massari. To help the process, the OSCE Mission to the FRY will launch an intensive nationwide "Get Out and Vote Campaign."
Ambassador Massari explained that "the future of Serbia can only be created by all its citizens. A vote cast is a vote for a better future."
The OSCE Mission's "Get Out and Vote Campaign" is also supported by the Council of Europe. The campaign will be formally launched on 26 November, marking the start of an intensive TV, radio, newspaper and billboard campaign.
