OSCE and Spanish Ministry of Interior organizes study visit for Serbian prison officials

BELGRADE, 17 September 2002 - A delegation of three Serbian prison officials - two from penitentiary institutions and one from the Ministry of Justice - are participating from 14 to 21 September in a study visit to penitentiary institutions in Spain.
The visit, which is organized by the Rule of Law/Human Rights Department of the OSCE Mission to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the Spanish Ministry of Interior, will focus on the role of economical units with regard to the rehabilitation of inmates and the self-sustainability of the penitentiary institution. Economical units are small enterprises within prison facilities, which are used for the social rehabilitation of inmates while servingtheir sentence.
The participants will receive first hand experience and knowledge of new models of the management of economical unites in penitentiary institutions, which will further the rehabilitation process of inmates through work and professional development.
The study visit is part of the OSCE Mission's support for the prison reform process in Serbia.
