Yugoslavia to join OSCE communications network

BELGRADE, 26 October 2001 (OSCE) - The OSCE Mission to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia welcomes the decision of Yugoslav authorities to join the network of direct communication between the capitals of OSCE participating States for the purpose of exchanging messages concerning military activities.
Being involved in involved in activities aimed at promoting military security, the OSCE attaches specific importance to the implementation by the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia of confidence- and security-building measures as contained in the Vienna Document 1999 and applicable to all OSCE participating States.
The transmission of messages related to confidence- and security-building measures is not only a technical device: by establishing direct military contacts and co-operation and by exchanging information on armed forces, the probability of misunderstanding or apprehension among different states can be reduced.
To mark the symbolic importance of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia connecting to the OSCE communications network, the event will be accompanied by a small ceremony on Monday, 29 October 2001 at 11.00 in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
