Media Freedom Literacy
Media Freedom Literacy (MFL) encompasses the skills and knowledge necessary to protect and promote media freedom, understand the ethical and legal implications of the media in today’s digital information ecosystem and communicate effectively, including by creating public interest content. This knowledge and skills are essential for our societies to make informed decisions in relation to the media content they consume and disseminate, and to participate in democratic processes.
The threats to media freedom, diversity, and the quality of available information warrant a holistic approach to media literacy.
The Office of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media is implementing a project aimed at supporting policy-making processes, cross-sectoral collaboration and public awareness in the OSCE participating States on MFL. The project offers tools, guidelines and recommendations and clarifies the roles of various stakeholders to foster MFL accross the OSCE region. Policies and initiatives anchored to media freedom-based approach will pave the way for more effective responses to current and future challenges in the rapidly changing media and information landscape
