Expert meeting on "How do we curtail the spread of hate speech, violent extremism and disinformation online while protecting free speech?”

The event on “How do we curtail the spread of hate speech, violent extremism and disinformation online while protecting free speech?” invited selected members of the Transatlantic High-Level Working Group on Online Content Moderation and Freedom of Expression. It provided a platform to discuss how to address unlawful content, such as violent extremism or terrorist content, as well as harmful content, such as disinformation, and examined the necessary steps to safeguard freedom of expression and media pluralism when moderating such content online. The event also discussed the role of emerging technologies, in particular machine-learning technologies, such as artificial intelligence, in shaping and arbitrating information online and thereby affecting public discourse.
