This page contains educational materials produced in response to significantly increased risks to civilians in Ukraine from mines, abandoned ordnance and other explosive remnants of war. These materials are free to use for educational and non-commercial purposes. They are produced by the OSCE Project Co-ordinator within a project implemented with the financial support of Global Affairs Canada, Federal Republic of Germany, the Slovak Republic, the Czech Republic, the Kingdom of Norway, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the United States of America.

    For civilians, it is strongly advised to the extent possible to avoid zones where active combat operations were taking place. Even if it is calm now, the area might be contaminated by mines, unexploded ordnance and abandoned munitions. Be cautious to move around in such areas! Check with local authorities if it is safe to return!

    Avoid abandoned military facilities or positions, as well as trenches and checkpoints! There could be mines and\or unexploded ordnance! If you need to pass by, ask locals if it is safe!

    Curious to have a closer look at a destroyed tank or an armored personnel carrier? DO NOT APPROACH! “Previous owners” or those who destroyed it may have left booby traps, mines or improvised explosive devices! Beware of any military equipment as it may also contain a supply of shells or other munitions that can explode any moment!

    Destroyed civilian infrastructure is a sign there was intense military action around! Some shells or mortars may have failed to explode and are still dangerous! They can go off if you move around them!

    Many accidents happened just because people thought it was safe to remove a metal object that seemed safe! Call 101 or 102! Only specifically trained professionals can survey and safely clear dangerous areas!

    Lost telephones, cigarette packs or even children toys may be dangerous in combat area. Sad experience of many armed conflicts in the world teaches it is better not to pick up abandoned things on the ground!
