The OSCE Programme Office in Dushanbe supports women's empowerment in the water sector
On 25-26 June 2024, the OSCE Programme Office in Dushanbe (POiD), in close collaboration with the HELVETAS, supported the 9th Syrdarya Women Basin Forum (Forum) and the 7th Syrdarya Basin Council (Council). The events, held in Khujand, brought together 100 water professionals from government agencies, international organizations, women’s associations, academia, and other water-related institutions.
On the first day, participants discussed the role and perspectives of women’s participation in integrated water resources management in the context of climate change and its impact in the Tajik part of the Syrdarya River Basin. They also emphasized the importance of the Forum in promoting the message of the Dushanbe Water Process and the 3rd International High-Level Water Conference.
On the second day, participants learned about the main achievements of the Council and discussed its further steps. They also reviewed the work of technical working groups on assessing groundwater and surface water quality, improving water use efficiency and productivity, and adapting to climate change and disaster risk reduction.
The events were supported in line with activities previously implemented by the POiD in water resources management. These initiatives are part of the POiD’s ongoing efforts to promote women’s participation in decision-making. They also align with the OSCE’s commitment to empowering women in the water sector.
