OSCE Programme Office in Dushanbe facilitates discussion on Tajikistan’s National Strategy on preventing violent extremism
The OSCE Programme Office in Dushanbe in co-operation with the General Prosecutor’s Office of Tajikistan facilitated a one-day roundtable discussion on the country’s National Strategy and Action Plan (NAP) for 2016-2020 on the prevention of violent extremism on 14 September 2017. The event brought together sixty participants from line ministries, the judiciary, key international partners and local think tanks as well as a representative from the OSCE Transnational Threats Department’s Anti-Terrorism Unit.
The roundtable discussion aimed at identifying areas where civil society, government agencies and the international community can work together towards the implementation of the Strategy and NAP, in line with international human rights standards and best practice.
The General Prosecutor’s Office, who acts as inter-agency co-ordinator on issues related combating violent extremism, took this opportunity to give an update about the implementation of the National Strategy adopted in 2016 and to indicate areas where international support is needed.
“We are witnessing how terrorism is becoming a global threat and endangering innocent lives. International co-operation in this regard is an utmost priority,” said Muhammad-Ibrohim Osimzoda, Tajikistan’s Deputy General Prosecutor. “The successful implementation of our National Strategy demands significant resources and we count on our international partners to support us in the implementation of this important policy document.”
“The OSCE participating States share the understanding that countering terrorist radicalization requires a comprehensive and multi-dimensional strategy,” said Ambassador Tuula Yrjölä, Head of the OSCE Programme Office in Dushanbe. She stated that the OSCE stands ready to work together with civil society, government agencies and international partners in the implementation of the NAP in line with relevant OSCE commitments.
The OSCE Programme Office in Dushanbe has since 2013 supported Tajikistan in the development of a National Strategy and built the capacity of civil society to address these issues at grass-root level.
