OSCE helps to improve skills of young journalists reporting on violent extremism and radicalization
From 26 to 29 April 2018, the OSCE Programme Office in Bishkek organized a training seminar for young journalists and students studying journalism. The workshop aimed to improve their knowledge and skills in covering security issues related to violent extremism and radicalization leading to terrorism (VERLT), and reporting on inter-communal relations.
During the training the participants discussed how media channels are used to disseminate extremist content and for recruiting. They were familiarized with legal aspects of international and national legislation on extremism, radicalization and terrorism. Ethics of journalism were also part of the training, which was delivered by an experienced international expert in close partnership with local experts from Kyrgyzstan’s Interior Ministry.
Other topics of the workshop included considering the relevant national legislation, understanding the VERLT terminology, and being able to objectively present information.
The National Programme Officer at the OSCE Programme Office in Bishkek, Andrey Butsman, said: "The work of journalists can influence public perception and shape people’s attitude toward violent extremism and radicalization. This is how the media can contribute to countering terrorism.”
