OSCE organises workshop for lawyers on anti-torture law in Kazakhstan
An OSCE-supported workshop for lawyers "Freedom from torture: international and national legislation and practice" concluded in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on 27 June 2017.
The two-day workshop for 30 practicing defence lawyers from Almaty and Astana focused on international and national anti-torture legislation and practice and the protection of torture victims. It aimed to strengthen the skills and expertise of lawyers necessary for providing legal consultations and representation in courts and improve the quality of such services. Participants learned about the procedure for filing complaints on individual torture cases before the UN human rights treaty bodies, among other things. Compensation to torture victims, such as restitution, rehabilitation and financial redress were also addressed during the workshop.
The event was jointly organized by the OSCE Programme Office in Astana, the NGO Public Foundation Charter for Human Rights and the joint Programme of the European Union and the Council of Europe “Support to the Kazakh authorities in improving the quality and efficiency of the Kazakh justice system”, as part of the Office’s continuous efforts to promote anti-torture legislation and prevent torture in the host country.
