OSCE Parliamentary Assembly President to visit Uzbekistan

COPENHAGEN, 12 February 1999 - From 16-18 February 1999, Mrs. Helle Degn, President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, will visit Uzbekistan to observe the situation in the Republic in connection with the core areas of the work of the OSCE Office in Uzbekistan. President Degn, representing more than 300 parliamentarians from 54 participating OSCE states, will on 16 February meet with Chairman of the Oliy Majlis, Mr. E. Khalilov; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. A. Kamilov and Director of the National Human Rights Center, Mr. A. Saidov. On 17 February, President Degn will also meet with Minister of Justice, Mr. S. Mirsafaev; Representative of the Oliy Majlis on Human Rights Issues, Mrs. S. Rashidova, and with Head of the Constitutional Court of Uzbekistan, Mr. B. Eshonov.
Mrs. Degn's visit to Uzbekistan is part of a series of extensive visits of the President of the OSCE PA to observe and support the work of OSCE Offices, to meet new OSCE officials in the field, meet high-ranking government officials and to draw attention to the role the OSCE plays in the region.
After Uzbekistan Mrs. Degn will visit Turkmenistan (18-20 February). From 22-26 February Mrs. Degn will visit Moldova and Ukraine.
