The Supplementary Human Dimension Meetings provide opportunity for dialogue and exchange of views between participating States, and civil society actors on the existing good practices and challenges about specific topics.
Supplementary Human Dimension Meeting (SHDM) III: National Minorities, Bridge Building and Integration
The third Supplementary Human Dimension Meeting (SHDM) on the topic of National Minorities, Bridge Building and Integration will take place in Vienna from 10 to 11 November 2016. The meeting is organized by the German OSCE Chairmanship-in-Office, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities (HCNM).
The meeting will address the topic of National Minorities, Bridge Building and Integration. It aims to encourage a discussion of the bridge building role and potential of national minority issues across the OSCE area and to explore the opportunities which lie in the variety of connections that can be built upon diverse societies to promote peace, security and economic development both within and between states.
Supplementary Human Dimension Meeting (SHDM) II: Freedom of Expression and Freedom of the Media with a Special Focus on Conflict Situations, Including Protection of Journalists and Reporting during Armed Conflict
OSCE participating States have long acknowledged the urgent need to improve the safety of journalists working in the OSCE region, and affirmed their commitment to do so on a number of occasions. They agreed to adopt all feasible measures to protect journalists engaged in dangerous professional missions, particularly in cases of armed conflict, and to co-operate to that effect (Moscow Meeting of the Conference on the Human Dimension of the CSCE, 1991). They also condemned all attacks on and harassment of journalists and affirmed their readiness to hold those directly responsible for such attacks and harassment accountable (Budapest Document, Summit of Heads of State or Government, 1994).
In accordance with these decisions, the German OSCE Chairmanship-in-Office, Office of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media and the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) will organize the second Supplementary Human Dimension Meeting (SHDM) of 2016 on the following topic: “Freedom of Expression and Freedom of the Media with a Special Focus on Conflict Situations, Including Protection of Journalists and Reporting During Armed Conflict”. The meeting will take place from 27 to 28 October 2016 in Vienna.
Supplementary Human Dimension Meeting (SHDM) I: Policies and strategies to further promote tolerance and non-discrimination
OSCE participating States strongly condemn racial and ethnic hatred, anti-Semitism, xenophobia, and discrimination against anyone as well as persecution on religious and ideological grounds, and have committed to combat these phenomena in all their forms (Copenhagen Document 1990), including combating hate speech and hate crime, while respecting human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the freedom of thought, conscience, religion or belief (MC Decision 10/05).Participating States have acknowledged the specificity of different forms of intolerance, while at the same time recognizing the importance of taking a comprehensive approach and addressing cross-cutting issues in order to effectively combat all forms of discrimination (MC Decision 10/07).
OSCE Contribution to the Protection of National Minorities
The meeting on OSCE Contribution to the Protection of National Minorities: HCNM recommendations and guidelines will take place in Vienna from 29 to 30 October 2015. The meeting is organized by the Serbian OSCE Chairmanship, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities (HCNM).
Supplementary Human Dimension Meeting on Freedoms of Peaceful Assembly and Association, with Emphasis on Freedom of Association
This Supplementary Human Dimension Meeting (SHDM) will provide a forum for the discussion of the freedoms of peaceful assembly and association as a means to achieving democracy and human security in the OSCE area. The topics will focus on a human security approach to freedoms of assembly and association, non-discrimination and the freedoms of peaceful assembly and association as well as the enhancement of the participation of associations in public decision making processes. The discussion will focus on the role of the OSCE participating States and other actors in safeguarding and promoting relevant OSCE commitments.
Supplementary Human Dimension Meeting: Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms in Economic Crisis
The third Supplementary Human Dimension Meeting on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms in Economic Crisis organized by the Swiss OSCE Chairmanship and the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights will take place in Vienna from 30 to 31 of October 2014.
