ODIHR publishes final report on parliamentary elections in Cyprus
The May 22 parliamentary elections in Cyprus were competitive, transparent and conducted in an environment characterized by respect for fundamental human rights and freedoms, the final report released by ODIHR on 7 September concludes.
The report notes that “the legal framework provides a sound basis for the conduct of democratic elections in accordance with OSCE commitments and international standards.”
However, the report suggests that the process could benefit if some existing inconsistencies within and between various laws were eliminated. Furthermore the current legislation does not explicitly provide for international or domestic non-partisan observation, despite existing OSCE commitments.
The election administration overall enjoys the trust and confidence of the participants of the electoral process.
