OSCE human rights chief arrives in Georgia for talks on human rights and elections

WARSAW, 17 June 2003 - The Director of the OSCE's Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), Ambassador Christian Strohal, arrived in Georgia today to discuss the country's human rights situation and assess preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
During the two-day visit, the ODIHR Director will meet President Eduard Shevardnadze, Foreign Minister Irakli Menagarishvili, leading members of the political parties represented in Parliament, and civil society representatives.
On 18 June, Ambassador Strohal will launch the second phase of a successful ODIHR-funded project enabling the Georgian Ombudsman office to deploy "rapid monitoring teams" which pay unexpected visits to police stations in order to document and analyze cases of reported human rights violations.
The ODIHR implements several other human rights and democratization projects in Georgia and will observe the parliamentary elections scheduled for 2 November 2003.
