OSCE/ODIHR starts observation of parliamentary elections in Armenia
YEREVAN 29 April 2003
YEREVAN, 29 April 2003 - The OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) has established an Election Observation Mission to monitor the parliamentary elections in Armenia scheduled for 25 May.
The Observation Mission is headed by Ambassador Robert L. Barry and consists of 28 international election experts from 17 OSCE participating States. The experts are based in the Mission headquarters in Yerevan and regions throughout the country.
During the coming weeks, the Observation Mission will assess the election process against national legislation and international election commitments agreed to by all OSCE participating States. Observers will monitor the election campaign, including the media, administrative preparations, and the resolution of election disputes.
The ODIHR plans to send 250 short-term observers to Armenia shortly before election day to monitor voting, counting of ballots, and vote tabulation. On the day after the election, the Observation Mission will issue a statement of preliminary findings and conclusions. A comprehensive final report will be released about a month after the completion of the election process.
The OSCE/ODIHR Election Observation Mission and the OSCE Office in Yerevan operate separately under their specific mandates.
